What is AL Amyloidosis?

Amyloidosis is a rare disease that occurs when an abnormal protein, called amyloid, builds up in your organs and interferes with their normal function. Amyloid is an abnormal protein that is produced in your bone marrow and can be deposited in any tissue or organ which can result into life-threatening organ failure. The treatments may include chemotherapy similar to that used to combat cancer.

OUR AL AMYLOIDOSIS STORY

Starting from February 2020, my father’s health suddenly went downhill. We brought him to multiple hospital departments in Belgium. However, each specialist was unable to diagnose his illness. In a span of a few months, our father’s health continued to decline, and his weight decreased from 72kg to 54kg.

It was only after 9 months, we decided to send him to China for a second opinion. It was an extremely difficult experience for him due to Covid-19. The doctors in China managed to diagnose him with AL Amyloidosis, an extremely rare disease. It turned our world upside down.

Unfortunately, the doctors noticed that the disease had already damaged some of his vital organs. We were told by the doctors in China to seek an AL Amyloidosis specialist in Belgium. So, our father eventually came back, even though all the travelling was very straining for him. All this would have been avoidable if the specialists were initially aware of AL Amyloidosis, so we could seek treatment immediately.

Currently, he is in the last stages of AL Amyloidosis. Our priority right now is to ensure his health remains stable. Our promise to you is to help fight this disease by raising awareness of AL Amyloidosis.  The aim is to be able to diagnose potential AL Amyloidosis patients at an earlier stage to prevent further harm. We will be supporting the cause by donating to the Amyloidosis Research Consortium.
